In education, the notebook interface provides a digital learning environment, particularly for the teaching of computational thinking. Notebooks track methodology to make it easier to reproduce results and calculations with different data sets. Notebooks are traditionally used in the sciences as electronic lab notebooks to document research procedures, data, calculations, and findings. The variety of notebook interface has since been extended and new forms are still evolving. Īs the notebook interface increased in popularity over the next two decades, notebooks for various computational back ends ("kernels") have been introduced, including MATLAB, Python, Julia, R, Scala, SQL, and others. Wolfram Mathematica 1.0 followed soon afterwards (1988). The earliest commercial system using the document metaphor was MathCAD, which also came out in 1987. Research on WYSIWYG mathematical systems supporting mixed text and calculations with a document metaphor begin to be published in 1987: Ron Avitzur's Milo, William Schelter's INFOR, Xerox PARC's Tioga and CaminoReal. Its idea of visual calculations is still widely used today but limited to documents that fit into a table. Notebook interfaces are widely used for statistics, data science, machine learning, and computer algebra. Modular notebooks may connect to a variety of computational back ends, called "kernels". Notebooks share some goals and features with spreadsheets and word processors but go beyond their limited data models. Some notebooks are WYSIWYG environments including executable calculations embedded in formatted documents others separate calculations and text into separate sections. Credit to 2K Sports for getting it right early and making a statement. The move of going with the controversial "outlaw" figure of Allen Iverson was a big move that set the tone for the rest of the franchise. The game also featured a one-off game mode where you took control of LeBron's career. ![]() LeBron had just gone back-to-back at the Miami Heat and made his first appearance on either an NBA Live or 2K cover in epic fashion. Iconic is the word that comes to mind when you see this cover. The patented tongue out and the famous No. MJ's first 2K cover appearance, and it was so good that he also featured the year after. It was a time that NBA Live still held the power in the basketball gaming landscape, so putting someone who was hard-nosed, aggressive and a fan favourite was a great move from the folk at 2K Sports. The attitude and aggression that Ben Wallace brought to the hardwood was perfectly represented in his 2K5 cover. When you got this game it felt like you were really buying into something awesome. A simpler approach and the first artwork that featured a player in street clothes. The cover of 2K4 went a different direction to what went before it. The background added another element to the cover, and allowed it to just squeeze into the top 10. This was one of three covers but we thought the Harden one was the best of the trio. Similar to 2K19 in regards to its background imagery, however 2K16 used pictures instead of words. Interestingly with Kyrie Irving changing teams, 2K delivered two different covers, both still very strong though. Another change from the red background that they had run with for multiple years before, but a good change indeed. Perhaps stiff not to be higher, as the 2K18 cover was excellent. The black and white colour scheme meant it lost some of it's appeal, but the classic Iverson image saves it from slipping further down the rankings. 2K3 (Allen Iverson)Ī signature image of AI and an early foray into what covers would look like in the future. Similar feel to the 2K12 cover from the year before and three exciting young players all in the limelight. The first time three athletes have featured on the front cover and it was a solid effort. An angry looking Paul George is always a good front cover image, however 2K fans were ready for a change. The sixth year of a really similar style of front cover and by this stage it had probably gotten a bit stale. AI still looked good on the cover, but it wasn't a game-changer by any means. Not the most amazing follow-up from the original 2K cover. 2K6 was slightly better than its successor, however it didn't represent the power, grunt, and just brute strength that all basketball fans think of when they see the great man. Poor old Shaq, the guy is an icon (and a genie!) yet has gotten two pretty average 2K covers. There was plenty that could have been done with the background and streetball-style feel that encompassed half the image, however KD was seemingly just plonked in the middle of the cover. ![]() ![]() 2K15 (Kevin Durant)Īfter the epic LeBron James 2K14 cover, Kevin Durant's artwork failed to build on the hype. It took a similar path to the 2K19 cover in regards to the background but failed to really hit the mark. Similar to the Chris Paul cover, it's not as if it was bad, it just lacked the flair and excitement that comes with the game. One of five Allen Iverson covers, however 2K2 is the lowest ranked of the bunch. 2K7 was an excellent game (this writer's first real venture into the 2K franchise in fact), however the cover didn't quite deliver. 16), we could understand but surely you get an image of him hanging off the rim after a monster stuff, or something along those lines. If it was while he was posting up (see No. So, why on earth have you got one of the most destructive players in the history of the league attacking off the dribble. ![]() Shaquille O'Neal was a power player, dominating around the rim and throwing down dunks regularly. Plain Chris and his 2K8 cover are sadly at the bottom of the pile. It's a pretty simple design and considering the time and potential avenues they could have gone down, it was a little bit disappointing. This wasn't necessarily a bad cover and Chris Paul was a good athlete choice, however it didn't really offer much. LeBron's 2k19 cover & Kobe's 2K17 cover), most of which are incredible. With the 20th anniversary of the game having passed, we thought we'd rank all the covers from over the years.Ī reminder that this list doesn't include the Legendary Edition covers (e.g. NBA 2K has slowly morphed its way into a staple of the basketball community and it always brings plenty of hype with its cover. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some can even be programmed to turn on and off gradually to simulate sunrise and sunset. Most can be set up to go on and off at certain time without the need for an external timer. This means you can set them to change colors and provide a variety of effects. LED lights come in a variety of colors, and many of the newer units are programmable. They are also bright enough to be used with all types of corals. They are also very compact and can be mounted in a canopy or directly above a topless tank. They are extremely energy efficient and they burn much cooler that other types of lights. They are currently the most expensive option to install, but they could end up saving you money over time. They have just been introduced over the last few years and have just recently become a viable alternative to fluorescent and metal halide. Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lights are the new kid on the block. However, depending on the type of lights you are using, keeping them inside a canopy could raise the temperature of the water, requiring the use of a chilling unit in some cases. ![]() ![]() Using a canopy will hide the glare of the lights from view and generally provides a more pleasing and finished look for the system. It all comes down to personal preference. Keeping the lights on the outside of the aquarium can also help keep the water cooler. The lights can be hung from the ceiling to create an interesting effect and allow full access to the tank for cleaning and maintenance. A new trend in the aquarium hobby is to go "topless". The aquarium lights can be mounted inside the canopy to provide a clean, finished look for the system. Canopies usually have a lid that opens on a hinge or a series of doors on the front that open to allow access for cleaning and feeding. A canopy is a box-shaped lid that goes on top of the aquarium. Many aquarium retailers will sell sets that include a matching aquarium, stand, and canopy. Many people prefer to select a stand that matches the look and style of the aquarium. This is especially important if you will be using an external filtration system that will need to be located underneath the stand. Solid stands provide much better support and also have the advantage of allowing you to store supplies and equipment out of sight. It is recommended to solid stand instead of an open frame stand. Once you have selected an aquarium, you need to decide what you are going to put it on. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You can also use macOS Recovery to reinstall macOS.If you have hardware or software that isn't compatible with Catalina, you might be able to install an earlier macOS, such as Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, or El Capitan. If you enter 12.345 in the field, an error message displays, as this exceeds the maximum number of digits and decimal places allowed. For example, if you specify a float with a precision of 4 and a scale of 2, the field accepts 12.34 (or 12.3 or 12). Specifying the precision and scale allows you to restrict the range of values and number formats a field can accept, giving you greater control. The ranges listed are for file and personal geodatabases. The following table lists data types, their ranges, and storage requirements. If you need to store fractional numbers between -3.4E38 and 1.2E38 only, specify the float data type, because it takes up 4 bytes, whereas the double data type takes up 8. If you need to store integers between -32,768 and 32,767 only, specify the short integer data type, because it takes up only 2 bytes, whereas the long integer data type takes up 4. This not only minimizes the amount of storage required but also improves performance. Second, when choosing between a short or long integer or between a float or double, choose the data type that takes up the least storage space. If you need to store fractional numbers that have decimal places, such as 0.23 or 1234.5678, specify a float or a double. If you just need to store whole numbers, such as 12 or 12,345,678, specify a short or long integer. In choosing the data type, first consider the need for whole numbers versus fractional numbers. Double (double-precision floating-point numbers).Float (single-precision floating-point numbers). You can store numbers in one of four numeric data types: Be sure you know the data type and size limitations of your destination storage format when moving data between data storage types. To learn more about the data type mapping process with your database management system, see Data types in the DBMS.Īdditionally, other data storage formats, such as shapefiles or dbf tables, have different data type limitations. As a result, the data type you see in the table or feature class properties in ArcGIS Desktop may change from what you initially defined. In this process, it is possible that the values will be stored in the DBMS as a different type, applying different criteria to the data attribute. This process is referred to as data type mapping. The types are matched to the closest data type available. If you store your data in a database or a geodatabase in a database management system (DBMS), ArcGIS data types and the data types of the DBMS might not match exactly. The data types explained in this topic include the data types available when creating a feature class or table with ArcGIS. Choosing the correct data type allows you to correctly store the data and facilitates your analysis, data management, and business needs. The available types include a variety of number types, text types, date types, binary large objects (BLOBs), or globally unique identifiers (GUIDs). When you create feature classes and tables, you select a data type for each field. ![]() ![]() Instead of teeth, the leatherback turtle has points on the tomium of its upper lip, with backwards spines in its throat (esophagus) to help it swallow food and to stop its prey from escaping once caught.Įsophagus of a leatherback sea turtle showing spines to retain preyĭ. Demonstrating countershading, the turtle's underside is lightly colored. The entire turtle's dorsal surface is colored dark grey to black, with a scattering of white blotches and spots. Leatherbacks are unique among reptiles in that their scales lack β-keratin. Seven distinct ridges rise from the carapace, crossing from the cranial to caudal margin of the turtle's back. Instead of scutes, it has thick, leathery skin with embedded minuscule osteoderms. Its most notable feature is the lack of a bony carapace. The leatherback has several characteristics that distinguish it from other sea turtles. Leatherback's front flippers can grow up to 2.7 m (8.9 ft) in large specimens, the largest flippers (even in comparison to its body) of any sea turtle. The leatherback's flippers are the largest in proportion to its body among extant sea turtles. Claws are absent from both pairs of flippers. Like other sea turtles, the leatherback has flattened forelimbs adapted for swimming in the open ocean. A large pair of front flippers powers the turtles through the water. Leatherback turtles have the most hydrodynamic body of any sea turtle, with a large, teardrop-shaped body. However, their sister taxon is the extinct family Protostegidae that included other species that did not have a hard carapace. The dermochelyids are relatives of the family Cheloniidae, which contains the other six extant sea turtle species. Relatives of modern leatherback turtles have existed in relatively the same form since the first true sea turtles evolved over 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. But probably more accurately derived from the lute's ribbed back which is in the form of a shell. The common names incorporating "lute" and "luth" compare the seven ridges that run the length of the animal's back to the seven strings on the musical instrument of the same name. Older names include "leathery turtle" and "trunk turtle". īoth the turtle's common and scientific names come from the leathery texture and appearance of its carapace ( Dermochelys coriacea literally translates to "Leathery Skin-turtle"). The subspecies were later labeled invalid synonyms of D. ![]() coriacea, with each given subspecies status as D. In 1884, the American naturalist Samuel Garman described the species as Sphargis coriacea schlegelii. In 1843, the zoologist Leopold Fitzinger put the genus in its own family, Dermochelyidae. The leatherback was then reclassified as Dermochelys coriacea. In 1816, French zoologist Henri Blainville coined the term Dermochelys. ĭomenico Agostino Vandelli named the species first in 1761 as Testudo coriacea after an animal captured at Ostia and donated to the University of Padua by Pope Clement XIII. The genus, in turn, contains the only extant member of the family Dermochelyidae. Taxonomy and evolution Taxonomy ĭermochelys coriacea is the only species in genus Dermochelys. It can easily be differentiated from other modern sea turtles by its lack of a bony shell instead, its carapace is covered by oily flesh and flexible, leather-like skin, for which it is named. It is the only living species in the genus Dermochelys and family Dermochelyidae. The leatherback sea turtle ( Dermochelys coriacea), sometimes called the lute turtle or leathery turtle or simply the luth, is the largest of all living turtles and the heaviest non- crocodilian reptile, reaching lengths of up to 1.8 metres (5 ft 11 in) and weights of 500 kilograms (1,100 lb).
